Rotala sp. ‘Bangladesh’ – ADA Tissue Culture
Rotala sp. ‘Bangladesh’ is a stunning stem plant known for its lush, bushy growth and vibrant pink to red hues under optimal conditions. Originating from Bangladesh, this species is prized for its delicate, needle-like leaves and ability to bring a striking contrast in texture and color to any aquascape. It thrives in high-tech setups where it grows quickly, adding density and beauty to midground or background plantings.
This product comes in ADA Tissue Culture, which ensures that the plant is free from pests, snails, algae, and diseases. It provides an ideal start for your aquascape with a healthy, clean plant ready for planting.
Detailed Care Guide:
Tank Requirements:
-
Lighting: Rotala sp. ‘Bangladesh’ requires medium to high light to maintain its vibrant pinkish-red coloration. Strong light (50+ PAR) will enhance the coloration and compact growth of this plant. In low light, the plant may turn green and become leggy.
-
CO2: CO2 supplementation is highly recommended for Rotala sp. ‘Bangladesh’ to achieve optimal growth and coloration. CO2 promotes faster growth, more vivid coloration, and helps keep the plant’s form compact and bushy.
-
Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrates such as ADA Aqua Soil are ideal. While Rotala sp. ‘Bangladesh’ can absorb nutrients from the water column, a good substrate will promote stronger root systems and overall healthier plants. Regular fertilization through root tabs or liquid fertilizers will ensure the plant has the nutrients it needs to thrive.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 70°F – 82°F (21°C – 28°C)
- pH: 5.0 – 7.0 (slightly acidic to neutral)
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (0 – 10 dGH)
Tissue Culture Preparation and Planting:
-
Opening the Tissue Culture:
- Gently open the ADA Tissue Culture container. The plant will be encased in a nutrient-rich gel that needs to be removed before planting.
-
Rinsing the Plant:
- Remove the plant from the container and rinse it under lukewarm water to thoroughly remove the gel. This gel can break down and harm water quality if left on the plant, so ensure it is completely washed off.
-
Dividing the Plant:
- Once the gel is removed, carefully separate the plant into smaller portions. Rotala sp. ‘Bangladesh’ can be divided into multiple stems, which can be planted individually for better spread and growth.
-
Planting:
- Using aquascaping tweezers, plant each stem into the substrate. Be sure to space the stems a few centimeters apart to give them room to grow and spread. Over time, the plant will fill in to create a dense, bushy appearance.
Growth and Maintenance:
-
Growth Rate: Under high light and CO2 conditions, Rotala sp. ‘Bangladesh’ grows quickly and will require frequent trimming to maintain a desirable shape and prevent it from overshadowing other plants.
-
Trimming: Regular trimming will promote lateral shoots and help the plant grow denser. Trim the tops of the plant and replant the cuttings to propagate new stems and create a fuller appearance.
-
Fertilization: Regular doses of liquid fertilizers rich in micronutrients, especially iron, are recommended to maintain the plant’s vibrant red-pink coloration. Without sufficient nutrients, the plant may lose its color and become pale or green.
Special Notes:
-
Coloration: The red and pink hues of Rotala sp. ‘Bangladesh’ are most pronounced under strong lighting and with CO2 injection. In lower light conditions, the plant may grow more green and lanky.
-
Placement: Best suited for the midground or background in an aquascape due to its height and dense, bushy growth. It pairs beautifully with green plants, offering contrast and a vibrant splash of color.
-
Compatibility: Safe for fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates. It makes a perfect addition to planted tanks, community aquariums, or shrimp tanks.
Challenges:
-
Light Sensitivity: The plant is highly dependent on strong light for its best form and color. In lower light, it may lose its pink-red tones and grow more sparsely.
-
CO2 Dependence: While it can survive without CO2, Rotala sp. ‘Bangladesh’ will grow much slower and may lose its vibrant coloration. CO2 supplementation is highly recommended to help the plant thrive.
Summary:
Rotala sp. ‘Bangladesh’ is a gorgeous stem plant that offers vibrant colors and bushy growth, making it a popular choice among aquascapers. It thrives in high-tech aquariums with strong light and CO2 injection, where it will display its full spectrum of colors from pink to red. Packaged in ADA Tissue Culture, this plant arrives free from pests and diseases, giving you a clean, healthy start for your aquascaping project.
When planting tissue culture, be sure to rinse off the gel thoroughly and divide the plant into small portions for easy planting.
