There are over 600+ variants/species of plecostomus. These species can range in size from as small as 2-3″ all the way to 17″. Most likely plecos in our store that we decide to carry, will be on the smaller scale generally around 6″ and under. Our chart below will be tailored specifically for this pleco. Since there are many variety of plecos, they originate from different waters and may require different care than other plecos. These fish require highly oxygenated water to survive, you can add a bubbler or make sure there is lots of surface agitation.

You will usually find these fish clinging onto rocks or the smooth surfaces such as the side of your glass. These fish are generally peaceful, but may be territorial towards each other if you don’t have tank space, cover, or shaded areas of your tank.We recommend you use a smooth substrate or non sharp gravel to ensure it doesn’t cut or harm itself. Make sure you some deeper research into the specific pleco before you decide to bring them home. A strikingly patterned, small growing species of Hypancistrus from the warm, acidic waters of the Rio Orinoco and its tributaries in Colombia, the L129 Colombian Zebra or False Zebra Pleco is an ideal species for the small to medium community aquarium.

The most beautifully marked “tiger” plecos of the genus Panaqolus, the L397 Alenquer Tiger Pleco boasts a beautiful vivid orange with black coloration when kept under optimal conditions. Originating from the waters surrounding Alenquer at the mouth of the Tapajos River in Brazil, L397 plecos are usually found in and around sunken trees and large patches of driftwood in the wild. Like its close relatives, it is a wood eater and in the aquarium should be provided with ample driftwood as well as other nutritious sinking foods.
