Description: The Longfin Zebra Danio, a popular variant of the classic Zebra Danio (Danio rerio), is a captivating freshwater fish known for its elongated, flowing fins and striking horizontal stripes. Originating from the rivers and streams of South Asia, these danios are small, torpedo-shaped fish, reaching up to 2 inches in length. They exhibit a playful and active temperament, making them ideal for lively community tanks.

With their distinct blue and silver stripes extending from head to tail, the Longfin Zebra Danios create a dynamic display as they dart around the aquarium. This variety is the result of selective breeding and has fins that are significantly longer than the standard Zebra Danio’s fins, adding an elegant appearance to their quick, shoaling behavior.

Care Guide

Tank Setup:

  • Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons for a small group of 5-6 fish, with an additional 2 gallons per extra danio.
  • Water Parameters: Keep water temperature between 64°F to 77°F, with a pH range of 6.8 to 8.0. Water hardness should be between 5-19 dGH.
  • Substrate: Use soft sand or fine gravel to replicate their natural riverbed habitat.
  • Decor and Plants: Provide ample swimming space with some planted areas and smooth rocks. Danios appreciate floating plants, bogwood, and hiding spots created with driftwood and caves.
  • Lighting: Standard aquarium lighting works well. These fish do not require specialized lighting, but blue lights can enhance their coloration.
  • Filtration and Flow: A moderate water flow and a reliable filter are essential to mimic the natural currents of their habitat.

Behavior and Compatibility: Longfin Zebra Danios are shoaling fish and should be kept in groups of at least five to prevent stress and promote natural behaviors. They are peaceful and thrive in community tanks with similarly-sized, non-aggressive fish. However, they may nip the fins of slower or long-finned tank mates, so be cautious when choosing companions.

Diet: These danios are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet. Feed them high-quality flake food supplemented with live or frozen options like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Additionally, they may enjoy blanched vegetables like spinach and zucchini. Offer food in small amounts twice a day.

Breeding: Longfin Zebra Danios are prolific breeders, and breeding can occur in a dedicated breeding tank. Females lay eggs that are fertilized by the male. Remove adults from the breeding tank after spawning to prevent them from eating the eggs. The fry hatch in about 48 hours and should be fed infusoria or finely crushed fish flakes until they are large enough to eat regular food.

Tank Mates: Good companions for Longfin Zebra Danios include other small, active fish like neon tetras, guppies, corydoras, and dwarf gouramis. Avoid slow-moving species with long fins, as they may be subject to fin-nipping behavior.

Health and Disease Prevention: Danios are hardy fish, but they can be susceptible to common freshwater diseases like Ich and Mycobacteriosis. Maintain pristine water conditions, provide a balanced diet, and watch for signs of illness, such as white spots, lethargy, or inflamed skin. Quarantine new tank additions to prevent disease introduction.

Fun Fact: Longfin Zebra Danios are often used in scientific research due to their genetic similarity to humans and their transparent embryos, which allow easy study of development processes.

By adding Longfin Zebra Danios to your aquarium, you’ll not only enjoy their beauty but also their lively and interactive behavior. They are perfect for beginners and seasoned aquarists alike!
